TRAFFIC SAFEY

2020 rising deaths in Georgia of worst offenders. top of state with most road fatalities.

after 3 years of decline.

Why?

5. failure to wear a seatbelt.

ten of thousands of lives are saved in US due to seat belt usage

4. speeding. 1/3 of fatalities are due to speeding.

2010 Georgia introduced the super speeder law to change behavior. increases fines of drivers that go above the speed limit.

3. motorcyle fatalities.

make 1% of all motor vehicle crashes in Georgia.

however the people that ride the motorcycles represent more than 20% of all driver fatalities (In Georgia).

2. pedestrian walkers.

more than 50% increase of death of pedestrian in last 10 years

1. alcohol.

1/4 of deaths are due to alcohol. Georgia has the most drunkest drivers.

avoid drunk driving.

**these compound if you do more than 1**

CHAPTER 2- FACTORS INFLUENCING DRIVER PERFORMANCE

1. aggresssive drivers -angry and allo

a. excessive speeding

b. running red lights and stop lights

c. holding hirn;= (?)

d. weaving in and out of lane changes

e. obstructing traffic flow

f. following too closely

g. passing illegally or unsafely

i. failing to signal (most common trait)

j. cursing drivers

TIPS FOR STAYING IN CONTROL

a. allow extra time for the trip

b. benefit if the doubt;

c. avoid peak driving hours

d. call ahead when you are driving late'

e. don't drive while angry

f. you cannot contol the situation

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE AROUND AN AGGRESSIVE DRIVER?

Avoid eye contract, get out of the way, focus on your safety first.

DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

leading cause of crashes in the US (intoxicated driving)

-less alert and ability to react is diminished

side side effects from consuming alcohol

slurred speech

altered mood

diminished coordination

blurry vision

BAC blood alcohol concentration

if greater than .08% is considered intoxicated. this is the legal limit.

*recommended you never drive after consuming alcohol.

marijuana

-negatively affect memory, learning, and concentration.

cocaine

confusion, time distortion, increased risk-taking, loss of vehicle control,

poor impulse control

methamphetamine: high-risk choices, excessive speeding, erratic driving and accidents.

DROWSY DRIVING

extreme fatigue can lead to dosing behind the wheel

signs:

inability to recall the last few miles

disconnected thoughts

head feel heavy

reaction time is slowed

drifting from your lane

missing traffic signs.

WAYS TO PREVENT DROWSY:

fresh air, move your eyes, and switch drivers every 2 hours.

drink water. sugar and caffeine affect short-term alertness but contribute to drowsiness over time.

CHAPTER 3: LAWS AND PROCEDURES

1) PASSING- have enough room to pass.

proper distance is 2-4 seconds.

check blind spots, increase speed, move ahead and signal to return to the lane.

look in your mirror. when you see pavement in front of the vehicle you are passing,

then proceed.

not pass- when lines are solid. zone in which is it unsafe to pass.

within 100 feet of an intersection, bridge, railroad crossing or railroads.

- make sure the line is broken up, make sure you can return to your line before the car before you is within 200 feet.

PASSING LANE

-when it a passing line (line is broken up) make sure you are on the right when you are not passing. do not get on the passing lane.

-do not drive on the passing lane (the line all the way to the right I call that the speed lane)

RIGHT OF WAY

-the privilege of having immediate use of a certain part of the road

-aid to safe and smooth traffic flow

-alleviate any confusion drivers may have at intersections

-it is given, not something taken

RIGHT OF WAYS LAW

turning left must yield the right of way to incoming traffic (don't make a left until no one is coming, common sense)

controlled intersections, follow them

FOUR WAY STOP (no lights)

allow the vehicle that arrives first to have the right of way

UNCONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS:

Vehicle on the left must yield to the vehicle to the right. (when they approach

the intersection at the same time)

PEDESTRIAN RIGHT OF WAY

Always give them the right of way

Stop at the intersections before the cross walk

Always give right away to school bus

failure to follow these rules:

fines of 1k

points to record

automatic license suspension for those under 21

TURNS

main cases

right turns: 5 tips

right on red: come to complete stop. yield to cars in their green light

You must yield to oncoming traffic when turning left except when:

You have a green left arrow indicating a protected turn

SIGNS ALWAYS TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER ANY OTHER RULES

SIGNS BREAKDOWN:

1. Center Lane signs- not passing lanes and you may not continuously drive in them. they are used for turning left.

2. Protected left on green arrow: they are protected from incoming traffic. make sure there is no more traffic before turning. (this sign look like green light is on and then green left turn signal is on, color green as well)

3. turn only sign (this lane turns in the next intersection)

WHERE YOU CANNOT STOP YOUR CAR:

-sidewalk or crosswalk

-within an intersection

-railroad track

-bridge on a highway

-highway tunnel

-anywhere you might obstruct traffic

SPEEDING:

-work zone speeding if you don't obey the fines go up to $2,000.

- following these closely

Minimum speed limits are often in place for what reason?

to maintain the general flow of traffic

SPEEDING IS EXPENSIVE

- Superspeed law is where any driver convicted of speeding 75 MPH

- Tow lane road,

-85 MPH  or over anywhere in Georgia, it's an additional fined an additional $200

-if you fail to pay on time your license will be suspended

SPEED KILLS

-traffic fatalities- total speeding related

-36k, a quarter of fatalities are speed based

-mixing alcohol, cars, and speed is a recipe for death.

-67% of speeding drivers in fatal crashes: alcohol impaired

STREET RACING:

-fast and furious type (my cousin Carlos used to do it)

-a driver is 20x more likely to die in a crash involving a train than an

accident with another vehicle

-railroad cross markings are white markings painted in the traffic lane before railroad crossings (they look like two big XXs and it takes a break of the line in the middle of the road). this is a no passing zone.

-stop within 50 feet but no less than 15 feet when:

-signal device is flashing

-train approaching

-crossing gate lowered

-flag person warning

-train is visible

RED FLASHING LIGHT:

-come to a complete stop before proceeding

acts a stop sign

look for cross traffic (be mindful that it does not always have to stop)

YELLOW FLASHING LIGHT:

-slow down

-proceed cautiously

-the drivers facing the yellow flashing light have the right of way

22 PEOPLE DIE A DAY WAITING FOR AN ORGAN.

Jail term up to 12 months for littering. whoa and fines as well.
